Autonomous eVTOL manufacturer EHang took a step closer to commercial operations on January 8th, as it flew 36 passengers on a sightseeing tour via its self-flying EH216s, in Hengqin New Area, China.

EHang signed partnerships with Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Pan-Tourism Development, Zhuhai Huafa Sports Operations Management and Flying World (Zhuhai) Technology, to jointly initiate urban air mobility (UAM) operations for aerial sightseeing and other air mobility services on the largest island in the Guangdong Province.

Li Weihui, deputy secretary of the Hengqin New Area, said: “We believe this new style of intelligent air mobility will have more and better uses and will flourish in our beautiful Hengqin New Area.”

Hengquin’s geographical location as well as natural scenery and rich tourism resources make it favourable for short- and medium-haul urban air transportation. The island is also a Free Trade Zone.

Lu Ting, CEO of Flying World (Zhuhai) Technology, said: “We believe this effort can gradually expand across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to form synergistic operations and development.

EHang has completed well over 2,000 test flights both in and outside of China. It remains one of the top contenders to develop airworthiness and certification standards for UAVs in the region.
