MTU Aero Engines has acquired eMoSys, an electric motor developer and small-volume manufacturer.

As one of Germany’s leading engine manufacturers MTU Aero believes the acquisition will assist in expanding the firm’s know-how on powertrain electrification. As part of the collaboration eMoSys will remain largely independent.

Lars Wagner, CEO MTU Aero Engines, said: “Our Flying Fuel Cell requires highly efficient, absolutely reliable electric motors, and the eMoSys motors already reach the highest known performance density. With eMoSys GmbH, we want to accelerate the use of electric motors in aviation and develop them to market maturity.”

Employing around 30 people, the eMoSys team has been working on electric motors for about 35 years, but the firm itself was founded in 2013. Ahead of the acquisition, it has already been working with MTU for several years on a project basis.

Stephan Eck, who will stay on as managing director of eMoSys, said: “eMoSys will be an innovation hub for MTU, and in exchange we will benefit from the know-how of our MTU colleagues and better market access. In the course of the takeover, our activities will focus on aviation, but we will also continue to drive innovative developments for customers in the automotive, racing, rail transport and medical sectors.”

The financials details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
