Aura Network Systems has welcomed the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) latest notice of proposed rule-making related to dedicated spectrum for advanced air mobility.

The inclusion of the Aura’s 450 MHz band for “control non-payload communications” services marks a “significant step” said the company. The FCC released the proposal on January 17th, 2025.

Aura CEO Kevin Steen said: “Aura’s 450 MHz nationwide network is uniquely positioned to meet our industry’s need for dedicated spectrum, and we applaud the FCC for releasing the NPRM, as it is essential for ensuring America’s continued leadership in global aviation and achieving the regulatory clarity needed to accelerate transformative UAS technologies.”

While the company can already provide CNPC services, Steen noted that the FCC’s action will support a wide range of applications, such as cargo logistics for both commercial and government markets.

“We are especially pleased to see the Commission recognise the importance of the Aeronautical Mobile Route Service designation for the spectrum, as well as the need to move away from complex site-by-site licensing,” added Steen.

FCC-licensed aviation-designated spectrum is “instrumental” to the development of Aura’s technology, he said. “If all of America is to fully realise the potential of AAM, the industry needs spectrum that is licensed, dedicated to aviation, and managed to ensure coverage along flight routes.”

In its initial petition, Aura requested updates to the FCC’s rules to allow the 450 MHz band to support both crewed aircraft and UAS.

“Aura remains committed to supporting the safe integration of UAS into controlled airspace, and we look forward to continuing our work with the FCC, other regulators, and industry stakeholders to advance this rule-making,” he added.
